6 of The Best Golf Courses in Mallorca

As well as one of the most popular holiday destinations in Europe, Mallorca has also built a reputation over the past forty years as a favourite location for golfing holidays and getaways.

And for good reason.

The largest of Spain’s Balearic Islands can offer a varied golfing experience among more than 20 courses. Golf experiences that can challenge all levels, and provide everyone with quality facilities, glorious conditions, a warm welcome and some stunning coastal and mountain scenery.

Add in the amazing beaches and the aqua-blue Mediterranean, the incredible nightlife of its seaside resorts and the bustling vibrancy of Palma, and you have every ingredient needed for a memorable golf holiday for all.

Here’s just a pick of some of the superb golf courses on offer when you book a golf holiday to Mallorca.

Alcanada

Clinging onto the northern edge of the island, Alcanada is a spectacular coastal course that offers amazing views of the mountain terrain and the bay across to the popular holiday resort of Alcudia, just a few kilometres away.

A Robert Trent Jones designed course, it offers a fabulous experience for both holiday and more competitive play. Immaculate fairways give way to slick, true greens with well-placed hazards ensuring thought on each shot. Each hole is crafted to retain your interest, from testing par-3s that stretch over 180m, to spectacular par-5s that can be reached in 2 for those long enough and brave enough to go boom off the tee.

Perhaps not as well known as some other courses on the island, Alcanada’s reputation is fast-growing as one of the premier courses on the island, and a must include on any golf trip.

Son Vida

Originally opened in the 1950s and given a full makeover in 2001, Son Vida is the oldest and best-known course on the island. It’s played host to a couple of European Tour events in the 90s, including a victory for Spanish icon Seve Ballesteros in 1990.

While not as long as some of the newer courses, what it lacks in length it more than makes up for in beauty, class and thought-provoking challenge. Few resort courses offer more scenic backdrops, with elevated fairways offering a stunning view of the bay around Palma, with the course and clubhouse offering immaculate condition.

The course is set up to reward accuracy and good driving. Hit it long and straight and you give yourself plenty of chances to score. On the other hand, a wayward shot can quickly turn a par to a double-bogey.

Close to the vibrancy of Palma, this is a true gem of a course.

T Golf & Country Club Poniente

Formerly known as simply, Poniente, the course is one of the most popular and established venues in Mallorca. A long-time favourite for golf tourists, the resort has been further improved thanks to a recent make-over of the course and the introduction of a new driving range and modern practice facilities.

The course offers an interesting challenge for golfers of most handicaps, with moderately long par-4s and some par-3s that put your accuracy to the test.

But what really gives the venue its appeal is simply the surroundings in which you play, and the tranquillity and scenery it offers. Fairways that are carved through rolling, pine-lined hills and the dotting of lakes across the courses make for a picturesque day away.

And, if you’ve based yourself in and around the bustling capital of Palma, then you’re only a 12km drive from the first tee.

Son Muntaner Golf

A neighbour to the Son Vida course on the same Arabella resort, Son Muntaner has established itself as a true gem of its own in the years since opening at the turn of the century.

Despite its relative youth, the design offers some nice classical touches, such as stone dykes and slim, hourglass greens. At 6,400m (7,000 yards) it’s a long course and can offer a stern challenge for even the lowest of handicappers while remaining a fun course to play thanks to a layout that’s never dull.

Another course that benefits from location, just a sand-wedge from the heart of Palma, allowing the always welcome prospect of combining a great day on the golf course with the kind of nightlife you may expect from a Mallorca holiday.

Son Gual

Son Gual Golf Course

One of the newest courses on the island, but already established as one of the best, Son Gual is a stunning championship course just a short distance from Palma city centre.

A whopping 6,620m (7,240 yards), this par-72 course has been moulded by architect Thomas Himmel, combining the dramatic local landscape with some awe-inspiring holes and facilities that offer a sense of being somewhere a touch special.

It’s a proper golfing test, especially if the wind gets up, but one that golfers of all abilities would be advised to experience. Numerous holes stand out for the quality and challenges, but it’s the signature par-5 18th, that will surely stick in the mind, offering a dramatic, water-laden finale back towards the clubhouse.

One of the island’s ‘must play’ courses.

Santa Ponsa 1

santa ponsa golf course

Now well into its fifth decade, the Santa Ponsa resort is one of the best known and most popular destinations for golf tourists to the island.

One of two courses on this little patch of golfer’s paradise, the course has played host to six European Tour events, welcoming icons such as Ballesteros, Langer, Olazabal and Woosnam, down the years.

Number 1 course offers a championship test, combining immaculate set-up and conditions with holes that reward and penalise in equal measure. While its length can intimidate (the par-5 10th stretching over 600 yards) the fairways are wide and forgiving and the greens are usually set up to keep things friendly for visitors.

Located close to the holiday town of Santa Ponsa, this is a regular central feature to any golf holiday to Mallorca, affording a day of quality golf and stunning scenery, with a short hop back to the bars and restaurants in the evening.

Beyond these six featured gems, you’ll find more than 20 courses across the island, each offering its own charm, challenges and scenic backdrops. Mallorca golf holidays truly combine the joy of quality time on the course with amazing non-golf entertainment, from bars and restaurants to beaches and walks. A reason it’s been such a popular destination for golf holidays in Europe for many decades.
