Golf Breaks In Tenerife
Tenerife, the largest of the Canary Islands, is a classic winter-sun favourite and an outstanding destination for golf holidays. With year-round sunshine, dramatic volcanic scenery and a choice of well-designed courses, it’s a place where every round feels a little bit special.
The island offers real contrast between the hot, dry south and the greener, more rugged north, with golf courses that make full use of the coastline, lava formations and Atlantic views. Whether you’re travelling as a couple, a group of friends or a society, Tenerife delivers a great mix of quality golf and relaxed holiday atmosphere.
Top Golf Courses In Tenerife
Tenerife’s golf courses are set against a backdrop of ocean views, ravines and volcanic rock, creating some of the most distinctive golf scenery in Europe. The island may have fewer courses than mainland Spain, but the quality and variety are excellent, with layouts to suit all handicaps and preferences.
Below are some of the most popular golf courses in Tenerife, including Las Américas, Golf del Sur, Costa Adeje, Buenavista, Amarilla and Abama.
Our Choice Of The Best Golf Courses In Tenerife
Tenerife’s warm, generally dry climate makes it an ideal destination for golf at almost any time of year. Combine that with spectacular coastal views, rugged volcanic landscapes and well-presented fairways and you have the perfect recipe for a memorable golf holiday.
Here are some of our favourite courses on the island:
A true golfing holiday complex, Golf Del Sur has been a popular destination for golfers since it first opened up in 1987. Just a short drive from the airport in the south of the island, this is a classic example of resort-style golf, replete with adjacent apartments and villas and a host of places to eat and drink.
As for the golf, you’ll find a truly impressive championship standard course (it’s a past host of tour event The Tenerife Open) that is beautifully set out while blending into the natural volcanic terrain. Walks along pristine fairways and greens seamlessly blended against craggy lava fields, although deviating away from the greenery is the pathway to dropped shots and lost balls.
The South of the island tends to be the favoured base for golf holidays in Tenerife and Golf Del Sur retains a favoured place among the regular visitors and a course that we’d highly recommend adding to the itinerary.
It may only have opened in 2005, but this Dave Thomas designed course in the south of the island has quickly developed a reputation as not only one of the must-play courses in the Canary Islands but in all of Spain and its island territories.
Part of the plush and prestigious Ritz-Carlton resort, this is just about the classiest golf experience you’ll find in Tenerife. And, while that is reflected in the green fees, believe us, you certainly get what you pay for.
From spectacular views across the Atlantic to sensational surroundings, lush greenery and a collection of thrillingly designed holes, this is the kind of golf that makes a memorable holiday occasion.
As you walk, or perhaps buggy, your way along the undulating and simply spotless fairways, winding their way through palm-lined corridors, you can’t help but appreciate the golfing treat, and a joy to play whatever your handicap.
It’s certainly a golf course that benefits from location, sitting adjacent to the holiday hotspots of Los Cristianos and Playa De Las Americas. But that’s not the only reason to come and play here.
The course itself stands on its own two feet, offering plenty to enjoy for golfers basing themselves at the southern end of Tenerife. Never less than beautifully presented, the course is a friendly track for all abilities while baring just enough teeth, in the form of well-placed bunkers and water hazards, to offer the right kind of challenge.
It’s the type of course where your round can be defined by the way you play the opening holes, with the general aim of ensuring your card is still intact through the first six.
Las Americas is one of a collection of cracking courses close to the tourist hotspots in the south of the island and one that ought to be considered when planning any trip to Tenerife.
Opened in the late 90s, as the resort of Adeje was starting to boom as a holiday hotspot, this is another course that benefits from its natural surroundings, convenient location and design that’s set up for holiday golfers.
As with Buenavista, the course offers an equal number of par-threes, fours and fives, and is similarly enjoyable because of it. And, while the layout and clubhouse welcome are geared toward the tourist, there is plenty of bite on the course to offer a genuine test for all golfers.
The wide greens are receptive but require a degree of accuracy in approach, while dog-legs on the longer holes need to be navigated with care. And, with the hardest two holes on the course being long par-threes that require accuracy with a long-iron, there’s a lot of fun to be had (and perhaps the occasional swear word).
Designed by former Ryder Cup star Manual Pinero, Sancti Petri Hills offers a quirky yet utterly delightful golf experience. Known as the golf garden, the course is lined by umbrella pines to give it a distinctly tropical feel.
The course is neatly laid out, with bunker placement and water hazards causing you to plot your way with care on most holes. And, with the pines offering borders to the fairways, keeping it straight off the tee is always helpful.
As well as the enjoyment of the course itself, Sancti Petri offers an ideal spot to base yourself on a golf holiday in Costa De La Luz, thanks to the abundance of accommodation, amenities and additional courses within a gap wedge away.
Throw in stunning views across the Atlantic and out towards the Adeje mountains, and this is a true golfing treat for visitors to the south of Tenerife.
From the dramatic clifftop holes at Buenavista to the immaculate resort layouts of Abama and Costa Adeje, each course offers its own challenges and character. After a day on the fairways, you can relive the highlights over dinner and drinks in the many bars and restaurants across the island’s resorts.
Tenerife is the classic holiday golf destination: well-established resorts, great nightlife if you want it, plenty of quieter corners if you don’t, and courses that are always in good condition. Make Tenerife your next golf holiday destination and get in touch with our team to start planning.
