Our Choice Of The Best Golf Courses In Porto

Portugal has been a golfing haven for more than a quarter of a century. And, while the oft-beaten path for many has been the coastal towns of the Algarve or the capital appeal of Lisbon, golf holidays to Porto have seen burgeoning popularity in recent years.

When you look at the mix of culture, hospitality and quality golf in the region, it’s easy to understand the allure.

The choice may be fewer than other areas of the country, but the quality is very high. With a mix of links and parkland style courses on offer, let’s look at the best courses in Porto that add to the appeal of this historic part of Portugal.

If you’re a lover of links golf and think that it’s the sole preserve of Britain and Ireland, then Estela provides a chance to think again.

This is not just a course near the sea.

Estela is a proper links golf course. Rolling dunes, craggy grass and daunting bunkers align themselves to sprawling fairways and hard greens. It’s a genuine test and a hugely enjoyable piece of traditional coastal golf.

While the climate is somewhat friendlier than its British counterparts, with less chance of driving rain to combat, its proximity to the Atlantic means it’s rarely too hot. And there’s often enough coastal wind to give it a true links feel.

Less than 30 minutes from the stunning city of Porto, Estela provides a perfect golf holiday venue. It’s a superb course with amazing scenery and is highly accessible.

Add this to the list of courses you’ll want to play.

What was once a royal residence from Portugal’s regal past is now a stunning hotel, spa and golf resort. And one of the classiest destinations you can choose for a golf holiday to the Porto region, or anywhere in Portugal for that matter.

As a destination, Vidago Palace is the epitome of traditional grandeur and modern luxury, a heady mix of classic European architecture and twenty-first-century amenities, making it an appealing place to spend some time in its own right.

As for the golf, well, it’s another gem in the Portuguese landscape.

Originally designed by the great Mackenzie Ross, the original 9-hole layout has been remodelled in recent years into a championship standard 18-hole course.

From fairways that cut through towering woodland, to stunning vistas from its high point, the layout rises and falls with the landscape, providing an amazing backdrop and spectacular views.

And, it offers some genuine tests for all abilities. It’s a course that needs to be thought out, with positioning off the tee all important. Find the fairways and make a score. Veer off-track and double-bogeys (or worse) can await.

The resort itself is over an hour away from the centre of Porto. For those staying in the city, the golf itself is worth the trip, even if it does make a longer day. But for those looking for a spot of five-star luxury in the region, then you can’t go far wrong with a stay at Vidago Palace.

Another Mackenzie Ross inspired golf course, Oporto is a fixture of the golfing landscape in Portugal.

The oldest course in the country and one of the oldest in all of mainland Europe, Oporto begs to be experienced by visitors to the Porto region.

The course has retained its traditional charm over the years, remaining largely unchanged in layout since its original design. And, while this makes it a shorter track than some of its more modern counterparts, it’s also the source of its appeal.

Beautifully maintained and enjoying wonderful viewpoints, the course is a joy to experience in every way. And what it may lack in length, it makes up for in testing approaches and interesting hole layouts. Edging towards links-style golf, you’ll find plenty of chances to score thanks to wide fairways and welcoming greens.

But beware, there’s plenty of chance for sorrow, too, with large bunkers, clumpy rough and unforgiving lies for balls that stray off the beaten path.

There’s a lot of fun to be had when taking on the formidable challenge of Ponte de Lima.

Set inland, Ponte de Lima’s a venue that contrasts beautifully with the coastal challenges of other courses in the region, making it a treat to play as part of your itinerary in the area.

Essentially the course is comprised of two 9-hole courses, pulled together to create a full round that really is the definition of a game of two halves.

The outward nine sends you out into the mountains, navigating your way through stunning woodland. With plenty of hills and slopes, it’s a test of stance and control, and lots of fun to play. But very much a loop to stay ‘in the game’.

By contrast, the back-nine levels out, offering generally flatter terrain and some genuine chances to score.
